Jessica is an Associate Professor at the Environmental Sustainability Research Centre, Brock University, Canada. She grew up in St. John’s, Newfoundland during the collapse of the North Atlantic cod stocks, which inspired many of her research interests. Trained as a human geographer, her research explores how various ocean governance arrangements recognize (or exclude) different actor groups, how costs and benefits are unevenly distributed across people and places, and how to design and implement more equitable forms of ocean governance. Her interests span a wide range of topics, including ocean equity, small-scale fisheries, coastal livelihoods, climate adaptation, blue justice, and marine conservation. Her research is collaborative and embraces multiple perspectives and ways of knowing. She is an Associate Editor at Nature Publishing Group's Ocean Sustainability and a Board Member of the Niagara Escarpment Biosphere Network.
