EMB Science Webinar - Navigating the Future V as inspiration and direction for marine science in the Ocean Decade

On Thursday 19 August 2021, EMB hosted its twelfth Science Lunch Webinar on the topic of 'Navigating the Future V as inspiration and direction for marine science in the Ocean Decade'. The webinar was 1 hour long and took place from 13:00-14:00 CEST.

The webinar "Navigating the Future V as inspiration and direction for marine science in the Ocean Decade" built on the science presented in EMB's flagship publication 'Navigating the Future V', and included a talk and Q&A session with co-author Michiel Vandegehuchte.

Michiel Vandegehuchte graduated as a bio-engineer at Ghent University (UGent) and did a PhD in environmental toxicology, using omics approaches to detect transcriptional effects of toxic stress in planktonic species and evaluating the role of epigenetics in the transgenerational transfer of stress responses. As a postdoc researcher at UGent, he led projects on effects and toxins of marine harmful algae, as well as on metal toxicity to marine mussels and their larvae, taking into account environmental factors, different populations and physiological aspects. He has also been involved in research projects related to marine litter and microplastic. Since 2017, he has been leading and building a new research department at Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) in Oostende. He coordinated the publication of an institutional research agenda for VLIZ, organized themes including ocean services in a changing ocean, the ocean and human health, ocean observations, and ocean past. The VLIZ research department now consists of a multidisciplinary team of more than thirty scientists, aiming to advance the understanding of processes and interactions in changing marine and coastal environments.

You can find his slides here.

The webinar was live-streamed on the EMB YouTube page and the recording is available there to re-watch.
