In this edition of the ECOP Wednesdays event series, hosted by the EMB Young Ambassadors and the EMB Secretariat for the EMB ECOP network, María Del Camino Troya will speak about "Bridging Sustainability in Fisheries: Innovative Solutions and Advocacy for a Resilient Blue Economy".
María Del Camino Troya is a marine policy expert with over seven years of experience in advancing sustainable blue economy initiatives across Europe and Latin America. She specializes in marine governance, stakeholder engagement, and policy analysis, with a strong focus on integrating environmental, economic, and social sustainability.
María has worked extensively on EU-funded projects to contribute to the development of a sustainable blue economy and marine biodiversity conservation. Her experience includes developing science-informed policies, fostering cross-sectoral collaboration, and advocating for sustainable fisheries and aquaculture practices through her work with international coalitions such as the EU IUU Coalition.
María’s research bridges the gap between policy frameworks and practical implementation, with expertise in marine spatial planning, multi-use of marine areas, and nature-inclusive design for offshore renewable systems. She holds advanced degrees in Maritime Spatial Planning and Countering Organized Crime, further deepening her understanding of complex governance and conservation challenges.
Passionate about making marine policy accessible and impactful, María is dedicated to promoting the sustainable use of ocean resources while safeguarding biodiversity and supporting coastal communities.
As a marine policy expert, she has worked on developing and implementing policies that balance environmental, social, and economic sustainability. Her work has spanned diverse areas, including stakeholder engagement, policy analysis, and strategic communications, particularly in the EU's marine policy landscape. Currently, she is engaged with projects such as ULTFARMS, where she focusses on the co-management of low-trophic aquaculture systems in offshore wind farms, and BLUE CONNECT, aimed at enhancing marine protected area (MPA) effectiveness and ecosystem restoration.
In her career she has also collaborated with international organizations and coalitions, such as the EU IUU Coalition, to advocate for sustainable practices in fisheries and aquaculture. She is particularly passionate about promoting stakeholder co-design processes that ensure policy frameworks are inclusive, innovative, and effective at protecting marine resources while enhancing coastal community resilience.
