YOUMARES 2022 Workshop

On Friday 14 October 2022, the EMB Young Ambassadors hosted a 2-hour workshop at the YOUMARES 2022 conference on 'Connecting to the Ocean: Learning to consider varying perspectives in conservation research'.

As part of the early career researcher's YOUMARES Conference which was held in Berlin, Germany, the EMB Young Ambassadors hosted a 2-hour workshop on 'Connecting to the Ocean: Learning to consider varying perspectives in conservation research'. The workshop highlighted how we bring our own realities and biases into research, and discussed the importance of considering other people's perspectives.

The agenda included:

  • A scene-setting presentation by EMB Young Ambassador Juliette Biquet;
  • A presentation on her work on the knowledge and relationships to nature values when making marine policies, with the example of UK marine protected areas by Professor Margherita Pieraccini (University of Bristol, UK) - you can find a copy of her slides here, and re-watch her presentation on the EMB YouTube Channel;
  • A panel discussion with ECOPs on how to consider these dimensions in our work for the Ocean, with Garima Poonia (The Kachrewaale Project, India), Diana Lorena Rico-Vélez (Kuehne Logistics University, Germany), Letícia Weber Oliveira (Haedes, Belgium) and Emily Wagdin (University of Exeter, UK);
  • Opportunity for interactive questions and discussion with attendees.

The workshop was available in person and online to attendees of the YOUMARES conference. To find out more about the YOUMARES conference, click here.
