Distribution models and habitat mapping for the application of an ecosystem approach to management

On Thursday 19 December 2024, EMB hosted its 44th Third Thursday Science Webinar featuring José Manuel González-Irusta who spoke on the topic of "Distribution models and habitat mapping for the application of an ecosystem approach to management".

This webinar is linked to EMB's Future Science Brief No. 11 on "Marine Habitat Mapping".

José Manuel González Irusta is a researcher from the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO-CSIC) in the oceanography laboratory of Santander. Since 2003 he has been working on benthic ecology of the circalittoral and bathyal habitats of the north-east Atlantic in different laboratories and European countries. His research is focused on understanding how the environmental factors (natural or anthropogenic) affect the distribution of benthic species and habitats. His work combines the growing spatial information in marine ecosystems with the information about distribution of marine species to improve our understanding of species autoecology and anthropogenic impacts. Since 2024 he has been co-chair of the OSPAR Benthic Habitats Expert Group (OBHEG) and of the ICES Working Group on Marine Habitat Mapping (WGMHM). He has also participated in several workshops organized by ICES (e.g. WKVME, WKVMBM, WKBENTH2, WKTRADE3) and since 2020 he has been part of the Working Group on Fisheries Benthic Impact and Trade-offs (WGFBIT). During 2022-2024 he participated in the Working Group of the European Marine Board on Marine Habitat mapping.

The recording of the webinar is available on the EMB YouTube Channel.
