The European Marine Board Communication Panel (EMBCP) has launched the Survey on Social Media Usage in Science Environments to explore how a wide range of actors and stakeholders engaged in research and development (R&D) — including researchers, science communicators, policy-makers, journalists, educators, industry representatives, and NGOs — use social media platforms in marine and environmental sciences.
By gathering insights on both individual and institutional practices, the study seeks to help communication teams in R&D organisations identify which platforms and strategies are most effective in reaching their target audiences and fostering meaningful dialogue about science.
Participants are invited to complete the questionnaire as private users of social media platforms. For those who are responsible for institutional communication, an additional section is included to reflect their professional activities.
The survey is anonymous and takes approximately 10–15 minutes to complete. It will remain open until 31 December 2025.
After the data analysis, the main results will be made available on the European Marine Board website.
This initiative aims to capture perspectives from across Europe and beyond. To ensure inclusivity and accessibility, the questionnaire has been translated into ten languages:

We greatly appreciate your contribution to this effort — your insights will support a deeper understanding of how social media can strengthen science communication and engagement in the environmental and marine research communities.
