The European Marine Board working group on Deep-Sea Research (WG Deep-Sea) had its kick-off meeting in Brussels on 14-15 January 2014. WG Deep-Sea, chaired by Professor Alex Rogers of the University of Oxford, UK, will bring together 12 multi-disciplinary experts to identify a powerful vision for the European deep-sea research. The WG will contribute to the aim of positioning Europe as a front-runner in matching economic opportunities with best science and governance associated with the emerging exploitation of biological and mineral resources from the deep ocean, and other expected activities such as CO2 sequestration and deposition.To achive these objectives, the EMB WG Deep-Sea will create a platform for cross-sector, interdisciplinary dialogue between deep-sea stakeholders and present expert recommendations for future research in the context of societal challenges and policy needs.
