Autumn 2013 plenary Lisbon smThe European Marine Board members met at the Autumn 2013 Plenary Meeting in Lisbon on 23 and 24 October, hosted by the Science and Technology Foundation (FCT). A number of important decisions were made by the Board, including the adoption of the membership application from the German Marine Research Consoritum (KDM), the election of a new EMB vice-Chair, Dr Gilles Lericolais of Ifremer, and the adoption of the terms of reference for the new activity on marine graduate training. Furthermore, strategic discussions took place on the next edition of the influencial EurOCEAN conference series, to take place from 7 to 9 October 2014 in Rome, as well as the upcoming EMB Open Forum dedicated to the challenges and opportunities of the exploration and exploitation in the Arctic (12 March 2014, Brussels). The open session of the meeting was attended by the Board's stakeholders and partners, as well as the President of the Science and Technology Foundation (FCT), Miguel C. Seabra, and the permanent observers to the Board's plenary meetings: the European Commission DG Research and Innovation, represented by Ana-Teresa Caetano, and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, represented by Luis Valdes.
