Congratulations to NOC and NERC on the Naming of the new Royal Research Ship Discovery

UK Marine Board members NOC (National Oceanography Centre) and NERC (Natural Environment Research Council) enjoyed a day to remember on Thursday, 10 October, when Her Royal Highness, Princess Anne, named the latest addition to the UK research fleet, RRS Discovery. Around 200 guests, including UK Science Minister, David Willets, gathered at the NOC facility in Southampton for the ceremony. The Discovery is the latest in an illustrious line of vessels bearing the name that dates back to 1602. The latest Discovery is almost 100 metres in length and can carry 24 crew and 28 scientists. Representing and investment of £75m (€88m) in UK marine science capacity, Discovery’s wide capability will allow deep-ocean research in the remotest parts of our planet, from tropical seas to polar waters.
