Annual Report 2017

The EMB Annual Report 2017 provides an overview of our strategic activities and events, including the output and results of EMB Working Groups and interactions it has undertaken to further bridge the gap between research, policy, industry and society.

The year 2017 has been an evolving year in the history of the European Marine Board (EMB). It was marked by serveal highlights, such as the succesfull and highly attended 6th EMB Forum on the role of marine science in the implementation of the UN 2030 agenda; the kick-off brainstorming session for the Navigating the Future V publication; and several EMB publications such as a position paper and a policy brief on Citizen Science for Coastal and Ocean Research; Policy Briefs on Decommissioning of offshore man-made structures and Marine Biotech; and a Science Commentary on Climate Change and sea-level rise. On the downside, the EMB had to see its Excutive Director Niall McDonough move on to a new challenge in his home country Ireland, and even more sadly, we had to bid farewell to our esteemed colleague and EMB Delegate representing the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), Prof. Mário Ruivo who passed away in January 2017.

To honour the memory of Prof. Mário Ruivo, the EMB Delegates will visit the exhibition 'Mar Mineral' dedicated to him in Lisbon, Portugal, as part of the EMB 2018 Spring Plenary meeting which will be hosted by FCT in Lisbon.
